With the eIDAS 2.0 Regulation, Europe is creating a regulatory framework for trusted digital identities, credentials and interactions for EU citizens in the digital space. The digitalisation project defines the European Identity Wallet "EUDI Wallet", which will be offered or certified by the respective member states in the future.

Since 2020, the partners of the IDunion funding project have gained extensive experience in the design of such an ecosystem and the integration of use cases with wallets for digital identities. This experience is now being incorporated into the revised eIDAS regulation and the German consultation process.

The members of the funding project are actively involved in defining the processes, specifications and standards of the revised regulation. In 2024, the consortium will focus on the practical implementation of the standards defined in the eIDAS 2.0 Architecture Reference Framework (ARF).

The IDunion funding project has been funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection since 2020 and is led by Lissi GmbH. The funding as part of the Secure Digital Identities showcase will continue until the end of 2024.

IDunion has already made a significant contribution to the success of a European ecosystem for trust in the digital space. Below is an overview of the most important achievements:

Foundation of IDunion SCE
In 2022, IDunion SCE was founded as a European cooperative by the members of the research project. The cooperative operates a technical network for the implementation of use cases and, as a legal entity with democratic governance, provides a valuable building block for an EU-wide collective identity infrastructure.

Development of the OpenID4VC protocol family
The IDunion community launched the OpenID4VC standard in 2021 and contributed to its development and standardisation. The standard was later integrated into the eIDAS 2.0 Architecture Reference Framework (ARF). The first public implementation was carried out by yes.com by Dr. Torsten Lodderstedt and Lissi GmbH with the Lissi ID-Wallet.

Organisational identities
eIDAS 2.0 also explicitly provides for an EUDI-Wallet and person identification data (PID) for legal entities. This creates the basis for identity management for collaboration in supply chains to enable use cases for the automated exchange of CO2 equivalents and product passport data in the form of attribute attestations. In cross-border use cases, these and other environmental and social governance (ESG) certificates can also be verified by customs and tax authorities. The IDunion community has been working intensively on this topic since 2020. A use case for the exchange of C02 equivalents based on the IDunion SCE network is in productive use. By participating in the large-scale pilot project "European Wallet Consortium (EWC)", this experience is actively incorporated into European activities, the ARF Expert Group and the eIDAS regulations.

eIDAS 2.0 conformity of the Lissi ID wallet
At the end of 2023, Lissi GmbH published the Lissi ID-Wallet, which was adapted to the requirements of the Architecture Reference Framework. The wallet thus enables tests for use cases in the large-scale pilots for future EUDI-Wallets.
