Smart Data Economy: New study presents data sharing platforms for organizations
The scientific assistance of the technology programme “Smart Data Economy” analyzed 24 data sharing platforms for the study "How to share data?", which offers recommendations for action in addition to business management and legal principles.
The use of data enables organizations to gain significant competitive advantages, especially when data from different sources is exchanged, aggregated and evaluated. As a result, data exchange between organizations is becoming increasingly important. Multi-sided data platforms especially offer an ideal opportunity here. Initial implementations have already been made, however, development is still in its early stages.
The study "How to share data?" looks at current practice and shows initial indications of the design of current and future platforms. Using 24 existing platforms as examples, the study presents the basic functions of data sharing platforms and their legal frameworks. Domain-specific platforms in the areas of industry, commerce, health and logistics as well as domain-unspecific offerings are taken into account. The study by the scientific assistance of the technology programme finds that there are two types of platforms emerging today: the real data sharing platforms, where nothing but data sharing takes place, and the marketplaces, where data is traded and prices are formed as a basis for purchase transactions on the plattform. The study concludes with first lessons learned for a successful design of platform-based data exchange.
