ExpliCareNEXT

Development of an explanatory AI-based context-adaptive system to guide the behaviour of unskilled home care workers

Brief description
ExpliCareNEXT focuses on simplifying care processes through digital artificial assistance, which enables unskilled workers to perform high-quality care activities. This is intended to counteract the growing shortage of skilled labour in Germany.

With this project outline, we are proposing the satellite project ExpliCareNEXT as part of the SmartLivingNEXT funding call. The project is located in the application field of digital health and care. The aim – from the concept to the real laboratory – is to relieve the burden on outpatient care on the basis of a participatory and user-centred development process (in the sense of contextual design). The focus lies on simplifying care processes through digital assistance and the use of explainable AI, which enables event-driven care based on smart home and contextual information. Hence, it makes it easier for unskilled workers to carry out high-quality care activities through instructions despite a lack of expertise. This solution ultimately also counteracts the growing shortage of skilled workers. Initial studies by inHaus GmbH show that investments can be amortised after just 1.5 years. ExpliCareNEXT creates central services in the ForeSight ecosystem such as speech analysis, activity recognition and ChatBot solutions for intelligent interactions between smart home systems and users. Data protection and usage law analyses of the available services as well as ethical review categories are integrated in order to increase user acceptance, participatory development, and explainability.
